Last week I was at the Y when my iPod went kaput on me. It made that "sad mac" face and strange crunching sounds, so I knew the situation was dire. I got home and my mom and I tried to figure it out, troubleshooting on the Apple website, etc. After trying all of the website's suggestions for re-booting, going into "disc" mode, etc., we came to the conclusion that it was an unfixable hardware problem. I set the iPod on the desk area in our kitchen and made a mental note to start looking for iPod sales in the Sunday ads.
Georgie managed to get ahold of the iPod this morning. I let him have it, thinking that it was broken and might as well be used to entertain him for awhile. He dropped it on the floor a few times and waved it through the air. That's when I noticed it was making chirping noises - as in, appropriate iPod chirping noises. I grabbed the iPod and looked at it - it was completely back to normal!
So there's the lesson - if you have a portable electronic device that you think is beyond repair, before you junk it, give it to a 21-month-old to bang around for awhile. It may save you lots of money!
