We left for a mini-vacation in Northern Wisconsin last Wednesday. Our first stop was in Bayfield, where we walked around the town and picnicked on the shores of Lake Superior in Ashland. The kids had fun swimming at the hotel pool (isn’t that always the best part of any trip for a kid?) and we all went to bed early. On Thursday, we took the ferry from Bayfield to Madeline Island, which was fantastic. Madeline Island is one of the Apostle Islands, and I highly recommend visiting the area if you’ve never been there. When the kids get a little older we would love to kayak around the Apostles – apparently it’s amazing.
Henry and Georgie had fun playing on the beach on Madeline Island and we walked around downtown LaPointe for awhile before heading back to our hotel for naps and more swimming. On Friday we visited the Bayfield Fish Hatchery (Mike’s idea, naturally) and then stopped by the Northern Great Lakes Visitor's Center which was amazing. When we walked in the door a lady greeted me and asked if we were there for Smokey the Bear’s birthday party. I was like, “um, noooo…” We stayed for the party, which included a puppet show on forest fires and meeting Smokey the Bear himself. Then we all got birthday cake and Henry won a raffle prize – a little stuffed Smokey. The kids got goody bags filled with fire prevention tips and had a great time.
We headed to Hayward later that day and visited the National Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame, where we climbed a 4-story muskie. I have nothing more to say about this. Mike loved it. He actually loved the whole Hayward area and was checking out real estate brochures and planning out when he’s going to buy a cabin. (I’ve also caught him on the internet since we’ve gotten back looking for properties.)We also ate at the original Famous Dave’s in Hayward, which we all loved.
That evening, Georgie woke up at 2:45am and never went back to sleep. We usually try to get a suite when on vacation in case this happens, but interestingly enough, the Country Inn & Suites in Hayward does not really have suites – they toss a mini-fridge and a microwave in the room and call it a suite. Which in my book is not a suite. Whatever, I’m rambling. Anyway, Georgie kept Mike and I up with his antics (“Georgie not sleeping! Georgie play with Mommy. I’m hungry, Mommy! I need to eat! Where’s Henry?” it went on like this until 6am), so I was kind of happy to get on the road on Saturday and back home. On our way out of Hayward we drove around the Chippewa Flowage and the best part of the trip occurred… WE SAW A BEAR!!! I was so, so, excited. I’ve never seen a bear in the wild before. Unfortunately it scampered into the woods before I could get a pic and Mike forbade me from getting out of the car to get a picture. Which in hindsight was probably good advice. It was so awesome though!

That is too funny, when we went fishing in Canada that is one of the things I wanted to see was a bear! Never have though..Looks like a fun, pretty place(: Those Muskie fish are ugly!

Yes, it was good Mike didn't let you get out of the car! He could be writing this post with news that his crazy wife was eaten by a bear! You're so funny. I would have been tempted too. And Scott would have let me. Gee, what does that say?
All of your mini Wisconsin vacations totally remind me of growing up. I love Hayward. Spent many summers nannying for a family on Lake Coo-do-ray (don't remember how to spell it but that's how it sounds). They have the best candy store in town that was a must every time we were there! Glad you guys had a great anniversary! Hope you're enjoying the rest of your summer- ours is over. School starts on Tuesday :(

Maybe the bear you saw was Smokey out celebrating his birthday some more.
