Henry's first soccer game was today - his team, the Zucchinis, played the Broccolis. They both had green jerseys just a shade apart so that created some confusion. All in all, it was a great time. And Henry scored a goal!! It was very exciting, especially since only 2 kids on the team scored goals. But perhaps the most entertaining part of watching Henry play is that he makes sound effects as he is running and kicking - for instance, as he runs down the field after the ball he is going "Zooooosh! Pow!" It was hysterical.
The AYSO soccer league is entirely run by parent volunteers, which I appreciate, but they totally guilt you into volunteering. When I registered Henry, the woman who took my registration asked, "Do you want to be a coach or assistant coach?" I replied, "Um, no, thanks anyway. I don't know anything about soccer." The lady was undeterred. "That's okay. We'll train you." I looked at her. "You don't understand. I really know nothing about soccer. I don't even know how many people are on a soccer team. I don't even think I've watched an entire soccer game in my life."
She sighed. "Okay, you HAVE to do SOMETHING. How about team parent?" So I reluctantly agreed, and scrawled on the bottom of the volunteer form "will do team parent if no one else wants to do it." I mean, who am I to take the team parent responsibility away from someone who really wants it? But lo and behold, last month I received my team parent packet in the mail. Essentially my duties entail helping the coaches and making sure the snack sign-up sheet gets filled out. So at practice last week I lose the snack sign up sheet and my team parent packet, roster, etc. I had to call the league and confess my ineptitude. The volunteer coordinator laughed. "You're not getting fired that easily!" So she hooked me up with new forms. And I was there today, in all my team parent glory, with orange slices, water, ice packs, and Rice Krispie treats for the little Zucchinis. I've got this team parent thing down.
