The difference between men and women

The other day we had a new hot water heater installed. Nothing was wrong with the one we had, it was just 20 years old and had a big pink blankie wrapped around it for extra insulation and we figured we were living on borrowed time with it. So we decided to be proactive and replace it on our own terms, rather than wake up some cold, Saturday morning with no hot water. Mike actually took the lead on this one and set it all up, all I had to do was open the door for the plumber and let him do his business. Later that day, Mike called, and the conversation went something like this:

MIKE - So, did the hot water heater get installed okay?
ANG - Yep.
MIKE - How does it look?
ANG - (Pauses) Um, fine. (Thinking, who the hell cares? Its in the storage room in the basement).
MIKE- (Excitedly) Well, what does it look like??
ANG - Mike, it's a tall, gray cylinder that heats water. Its not like Vera Wang designs these things.

As soon as he got home, he blazed a trail to the basement to check it out. Keep in mind this is the same man who barely glanced at the flooring samples I brought home, had no opinion whatsoever on paint colors, and is generally apathetic about all remodeling choices.

I am starting to get excited about teaching next semester - I am adjunct faculty at the university here, and I'll be teaching a graduate seminar in the spring. As much as I enjoy being home full-time with the boys, I really try to strive for balance in my life - I need it. For me, it's important to do something other than be Hank and Georgie's mom. Don't get me wrong - it's a good job title, and I like it, but I worked my tail off for my degree and I really do enjoy being a school psychologist. Plus, I like getting a paycheck with my own name on it.

Yep, that's a man for you! Your dad took two days off work to watch men roof the house and I swear I caught him a few times out there admiring the shingles..

That's exciting that you'll be teaching. I know what you mean about working so hard for your degree. It's hard to just stop using it. (Especially when you're still paying for it like I am with student loans). I'll be looking for updates when you begin in the spring!
